Why Is Medigap Plan F Popular?

Medigap Plan F is one of the most popular supplement plans because of the amount of coverage it offers compared to other plans. It provides 100% coverage for:

  • Part A hospice care coinsurance and copayment
  • Part A and B coinsurance and hospital costs
  • Part A and B deductible
  • Part B excess charges
  • First three pints of blood for transfusions
  • Skilled nursing facility care coinsurance

It also offers 80% coverage for a foreign travel emergency.

High Deductible Plan F

This high deductible option gives you the same coverage as regular Plan F but offers a high deductible to limit your out-of-pocket spending. You must meet this deductible for the plan’s coverage to begin. The deductible you must meet in 2020 is $2,340.

Your premiums will not count toward the deductible. However, any costs incurred from Part A and B deductibles, copayments, or coinsurance, will count toward the deductible. Once the deductible is met, you will not have any out-pocket-costs for the rest of the year.

Because the deductible is high, this option often has lower premiums.

Is Plan F still available?

According to the Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization legislation, Medicare Supplement Plans are no longer allowed to cover the Part B deductible. This caused Medigap Plans C and F to be discontinued. However, they are still available to those who were eligible for Medicare before January 1, 2020.

Alternative to Plan F

For those who are not eligible for Plan F, Medigap Plan G is an excellent alternative as it offers the same coverage:

  • Part A hospice care coinsurance and copayment
  • Part A deductible
  • Part A and B coinsurance and hospital costs
  • Part B excess charges
  • First three pints of blood for transfusions
  • Skilled nursing facility care coinsurance
  • 80% coverage of a foreign travel emergency

However, Plan G does not cover the Part B deductible.

Plan G also has a high deductible option. For the plan’s coverage to start, you must meet the $2,340 deductible. You will then receive the same coverage offered by regular Plan G.
