Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period

The Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period is an opportunity to make changes to your Medicare Advantage plan. As confusing as it may seem, this period is not meant for you to enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan for the first time. To use this period, you must already be enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan.

How Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Works

The Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period happens every year from January 1 to March 31. During this period, you will be able to:

  • Switch to another Medicare Advantage plan, with or without prescription drug coverage
  • Drop your Medicare Advantage plan to go back to Original Medicare and also join a Part D plan

This period should not be confused with the General Enrollment Period, which is also from January 1 to March 31. The General Enrollment Period is only meant for individuals who did not enroll in Medicare when they first became eligible to enroll.

Why Use This Period?

You never know what better options are out there. Your coverage needs may change, so utilizing this period can help you search for a more budget-friendly, better-coverage plan.

What You Should Do

The first step is to take a look at your own coverage. Know what you already have, then take a look out into what’s available in your area—keep track of potential plans, then compare them with your current one. If you think another option is better, it’s time to make the switch.
