Medicare is a great health insurance option for any senior citizen. It offers coverage that makes medical bills less burdensome and provides peace of mind that a medical issue can be taken care of without making any major financial sacrifices.
Eligibility is a question that often comes up when discussing Medicare and its benefits, though.
Age Requirement
Medicare eligibility, for most people, comes when they reach 65 years of age. It’s advised that anyone approaching their 65th birthday should look into joining, as this is the time where one can enroll without having to pay a late enrollment penalty. Some beneficiaries do not have to worry about enrolling themselves as they are automatically enrolled and receive premium-free Medicare Part A.
If you are receiving Social Security or Railroad Retirement Board benefits, you will not have to worry about taking any steps to join Medicare. You will be automatically enrolled, and your coverage will begin on the first day of the month of your 65th birthday. If your birthday happens to fall on the first of the month, your automatic enrollment will take place on the first day of the month prior to your 65th birthday.
Getting Medicare Under 65
Medicare is thought to be exclusive to seniors ages 65 and older. But this is not always the case. If you have been receiving disability benefits, you can qualify for Medicare. In fact, you are signed up automatically – you don’t have to do anything on your end. Instead of your 65th birthday, your coverage begins after receiving disability benefits for 24 months.
What Else Can I Qualify for If I Qualify for Medicare?
Once you’re eligible for Medicare, you have a wealth of options available to you. This is especially true when you join both Medicare Part A and Part B because you have the freedom to choose to join a Medicare Supplement Plan or a Medicare Advantage Plan. Under those options, there are routes to go within them.
