Medicare enrollment can be complicated, and it’s always nice to have help. But who can help you? Here are a few of your options.
Why is Medicare Enrollment So Complicated?
Medicare enrollment is tricky. Why? The first step to Medicare enrollment is knowing when you’re eligible. Most people will be eligible for Medicare starting at age 65. If you’re coming up on your 65th birthday, you should start not just looking for someone to help you, but start considering your own budget and health needs as well.
Your options are Original Medicare, Medicare Advantage, Part D, and/or a Medicare Supplement plan. Finding the right information about these plans is the best way to push you towards successful Medicare enrollment.
Learn More About Medicare
Then, in terms of finding some extra help, you can look within your own family and friends first. While their knowledge of Medicare is probably very limited, they can help you research and set a timeline.
However, there’s not much you can do without a Medicare expert. This is why it’s important to work with one, such as those with Midwest Medigap, so you can get all the information you need and enroll in the right plan for you.
An important note—you may actually be automatically enrolled in Medicare. If you’re retired for at least four months prior to your 65th birthday, you should just receive a letter in the mail with your new Medicare Part A and Part B card. You can then enroll in other Medicare plans if you choose.
But, not everyone is retired in time for automatic enrollment. If you aren’t but are still covered by your employer health plan, you can wait to enroll in Medicare until you retire. You may need help from an expert with enrollment at that point.
Make sure, however, that if you aren’t automatically enrolled and aren’t covered by employer insurance, that you enroll within your Initial Enrollment Period. Otherwise, you may accrue late penalty fees.
Work With An Experienced Medicare Agent
Things like late fees, automatic enrollment, and other Medicare plans are all reasons why it’s extremely beneficial to work with a Medicare agent. They are experts in all things Medicare and will be able to guide you through all of the ins and outs of your Medicare journey. And, if you’re interested in a Medicare plan besides Original Medicare (Parts A and B), a Medicare agent can help you compare plans and find the best one for you.
